A 47-year-old man was tragically killed Monday morning in an equipment accident at a San Antonia landfill.
The body of Luis Antonio Flores was discovered around 10:15 a.m. on December 4th, shortly after he had arrived via dump truck at the Tessman Road Landfill on the city’s East Side.
Victim Became Caught in Hydraulic Arm
San Antonio police have indicated that Flores became caught in a hydraulic arm used to operate the netting on top of the truck he was driving. However, there were no witnesses to the accident.
Flores was discovered outside his truck with severe injuries.
“Someone called police saying he looked like he was in distress,” San Antonio Police Officer Carlos Ortiz told local media outlets. “But by that point there was no chance of saving him.”
Flores was pronounced dead at the scene.
Ortiz characterized the incident as an “unfortunate industrial accident.”
Deceased Worker Employed by Republic Services
The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office has determined that Flores died of a cervical spine fracture and accidental asphyxiation.
Flores was an employee of Republic Services, the owner of the Tessman Road Landfill.
“It is with great sadness for the entire Republic Services family that we learned yesterday that one of our own did not be making it home safely to his family. We are mourning the loss of our good friend and coworker, and our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones,” the company said in a statement. “Republic is fully cooperating with the San Antonio Police Department, and any additional media inquiries should be directed to local authorities.”
