Hurricane season comes every year, often causing major destruction in one or all of the months of its duration. If you live in Houston or are considering moving to the area, you may wonder which month is generally the worst for Atlantic hurricanes. While it can vary from year to year, you’ll often find one particular month to be the most common culprit.
Read on to learn the worst month of Houston’s hurricane season and how our undefeated Texas hurricane & flood damage lawyers can help secure your future in the wake of a catastrophic storm.
The September Peak
According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), the peak of the hurricane season in the Atlantic is September 10. For the past three-plus decades, data from the NHC shows that between 1991 and 2020, most hurricanes formed, on average, between August 11 and November 15, with major hurricanes starting on September 1 and ending on October 28.
This peak is characterized by an intense flurry of hurricane activity that causes devastating loss of property and life. It can also leave large numbers of residents displaced.
Keep in mind that not all hurricanes make landfall. Those that do not can still cause major damage, and that damage may only worsen or continue once landfall happens.
A closer look at hurricane data shows that between the years 1851 and 2020, the average number of landfall hurricanes was 110 in the month of September. August came in a close second at 81.
Most May Not Equal Worst
Just because September historically has the most landfall hurricanes does not mean it has the worst hurricanes with respect to devastation. August, for example, is when some of the country’s worst hurricanes have hit.
Hurricane Katrina of 2005, which caused unfathomable destruction and financial loss in New Orleans and surrounding states, occurred in the month of August. Hurricane Harvey also struck in August of 2017.
October has also seen some of the most unforgiving hurricane landfalls in history, including:
- Hurricane Milton in 2024
- Hurricane Sandy in 2012
- Hurricane Michael in 2018
These statistics show that although September is the peak month for hurricane activity, the worst hurricanes of the year can take place in October or August.
Insurance Issues After a Hurricane
No matter when hurricanes strike, insurance plays a key part in the aftermath of these storms. Policyholders and victims need compensation to cover their losses related to hurricane damage.
Unfortunately, insurance companies may not pay proper compensation for injuries and property damage after a hurricane. Instead, claimants often have to fight hard to get what they deserve.
That’s where the right legal team makes all the difference. Hiring experienced, trial-tested attorneys not only levels the playing field but ensures that you maximize your recovery. Preparing For a New Hurricane Season
One of the most important preparations you can make before hurricane season is ensuring that your insurance is in order. This begins with understanding what your policy covers and doesn’t cover. Knowing the scope of your auto, home, and business policies can help you manage expectations.
It’s also critical that you have a way to stay abreast of all government and news communications about the hurricane. Cell phones and network-based methods of communication are convenient but may be unreliable if a network goes down. Battery-operated radios can be dependable, as can CB radios and other non-network transmitters and receivers.
An Ounce of Prevention Is Key in Houston
An ounce of prevention can save lives, money, and time, especially when it comes to hurricanes. However, even with preparation, Houston hurricanes can pose a significant risk to all in their path.
Knowing what to do after a serious hurricane injury like a broken bone or damage to your property is crucial to getting the compensation you deserve. In all cases, contacting an attorney can help you determine the right steps forward.
