Authorities have identified the worker tragically killed last Friday night when an explosion erupted at the Calpine Company Energy Generation plant in Corpus Christi, Texas.
According to the Nueces County Medical Examiner’s Office, the deceased was a 36-year-old man from the local area. His exact cause of death remains undetermined pending an autopsy.
Calpine Company Plant Explosion Involved Natural Gas
The June 18th explosion at the Calpine Company Corpus Christi Energy Center erupted shortly after 6:3r0 p.m. The Port of Corpus Christi Police later confirmed that the blast involved natural gas.
Firefighters were able to bring the resulting fire under control within hours. Although a HAZMAT team was dispatched to the scene, authorities maintained that the explosion hadn’t resulted in any outside impacts.
No one else was injured in connection with the incident.
Corpus Christ Natural Gas Explosion Remains Under Investigation
So far, it’s not clear what triggered last Friday’s deadly natural gas explosion. An investigation is underway.
According to its website, Calpine is North America’s largest generator of electricity from natural gas and geothermal resources. The company currently has 76 plants in operation or under construction in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Located at 3952 Buddy Lawrence Drive and I-37, the Calpine Company Corpus Christi Energy Center supplies steam and electricity to Citgo Refining Company and Flint Hills Resources and additional steam to Elementis Chromium. The facility also sells power to the Texas wholesale market.
The plant’s last major incident occurred in October 2020, when a worker suffered an electrical shock while working on scaffolding 25-feet above the ground. The man was found unconscious on the platform and rushed to the hospital for treatment.
