A boiler collapse at International Paper’s Savannah, Georgia mill tragically claimed the life of a contract worker on Tuesday.
Contractors Were Working to Remove Boiler Platform
First responders were called to International Paper, located at 1201 West Lathrop Ave., shortly before 8:30 a.m. on June 12th.
A group of contractors was working to demolish the platform when it suddenly collapsed.
Deceased Contractor Was Trapped Beneath Falling Boiler Pipes
Juan Medina was on a manlift at the time and was pinned beneath a mass of fallen boiler pipes.
A rescue crew from Savanah Fire cut through a metal plate and cleared a path through the wreckage.
Sadly, Medina died before they could reach him.
International Paper’s Response Team is now working with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to determine what caused the platform collapse.
International Paper Cited for 2 Serious OSHA Violations Following Worker’s Death in 2014

The facility’s last fatal accident occurred in August 2014, when a maintenance employee was pinched by a hydraulic-powered elevating device and carried approximately 18 feet to a second level.
The worker, who sustained multiple injuries to internal organs and an amputated leg, was pronounced dead at the scene.
OSHA ultimately cited International Paper for two serious workplace violations in connection with that incident.
