A contractor was hospitalized Sunday afternoon, following an explosion at the Phillips 66 Wood River refinery in Roxana, Illinois.
Explosion Ignited Fire on Refinery’s 2nd-Largest Processing Unit
People living in Roxana reported hearing an explosion on February 10th, shortly after 4:30 p.m.
Moments later, a tower of flames began to rise from the Wood River refinery at 900 South Central Avenue.
The blast apparently ignited a fire on the facility’s second-largest crude processing unit. At the time, the unit was returning to operations after a maintenance shutdown.
The refinery’s fire crews quickly isolated the blaze, and by 7:00 p.m it was extinguished.
Contractor Treated for Burns After Wind River Refinery Explosion
Paramedics transferred an unidentified contract worker to a local hospital with burns.
Although authorities have not commented on the man’s condition, media reports indicate he remained hospitalized into Monday evening.
All other employees and contractors at the Wood River refinery have been accounted for.
4 Phillips 66 Refinery Workers Injured Last September
Located 23 miles from St. Louis, Missouri, the Wood River refinery can process 330,000 barrels of crude oil per day and employs over 1,100 people.
Phillips 66 operates the 2,200-acre facility in a joint venture with Cenovus Energy Inc. of Canada. The Houston, Texas company serves as the venture’s managing partner.
The Wood River refinery experienced its last serious incident on September 16th, when four maintenance contractors suffered a “respiratory exposure” in one of the facility’s towers.
