Two contract workers were rushed to the hospital on Saturday afternoon, after a fire erupted at a pipeline near the LyondellBassell oil refinery in southeast Houston, Texas.
Pipeline Worker Impaled, Another Seriously Burned
The Houston Fire Department responded to the January 5th incident in the 1200 block of Lawndale Street shortly after 12:15 p.m.
Once they arrived, crews discovered that a pipe had impaled one of contractors through the back and abdomen.
Although paramedics airlifted the man from the scene, he did not fit in the helicopter until firefighters cut the pipe.
An ambulance also transferred a second worker with severe burns to an area hospital.
Pipeline Fire Did Not Affect LyondellBassell Refinery Operations
According to LyondellBassell, Saturday’s pipeline fire did not occur on refinery property or affect its operations.
So far, authorities in Houston have not identified the injured men or their employer.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Pipeline Explosions and Accidents Have Injured 6 Workers Since November
Saturday’s incident is at least the third pipeline-related accident to seriously injure workers in as many months.
On December 9, 2018, for example, two Precision Pipeline contractors were hurt during a cleaning operation at an Energy Transfer pipeline in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.
Just weeks earlier, a 24-inch pipeline exploded outside the Energy Transfer Waha Gas Processing Plant in Coyanosa, Texas.
The November 23rd explosion also injured two contractors, including one man who suffered severe burns.
