Officials in Louisiana are trying to determine why a pontoon boat exploded late Saturday afternoon on Cypress Lake, injuring 9 people.
5 Hospitalized for Severe Burns, Head, and Spinal Injuries
A sticker granting lake access indicates that the boaters arrived at Cypress Park on the morning of June 15th. The explosion occurred around 5:00 p.m. the same day, as the vessel was pulling an individual on an inner tube.
All 9 people aboard were injured in the blast, including 5 who were taken to the hospital.
A Shreveport man who was driving the pontoon suffered a crushed vertebra, as well as back and head injuries.
Two passengers sustained severe burns to the face, including one who also had a fractured vertebra.
Another seriously injured passenger suffered a lower leg injury, while a fifth had issues with vision and trouble breathing.
Explosion May Have Resulted from Leaking Fuel Tank
What was left of the pontoon boat was fished from Cypress Lake on Monday.
An investigator from the Benton Fire Department, who was appointed to lead the investigation, stated that the explosion appears to have been caused by a leaking fuel tank.
“We feel like it was definitely an explosion at the tank,” Cypress Park Executive Director Robert Berry told the Bossier Press.
“We pulled the top off and got to the actual tank that was underneath there. It was some kind of leak that caused it.”
