Zehl & Associates is representing several workers in connection with a massive explosion that seriously injured four workers at the ExxonMobil Olefins Plant in Baytown, Texas, on December 23, 2021.
3 ExxonMobil Workers Suffered Flash Burns, Another a Broken Leg
The most recent explosion at the ExxonMobil Baytown Complex erupted at approximately 1:00 a.m., just two days before Christmas.
The impact of the blast was heard and felt for miles, waking many Baytown residents from their sleep. The resulting fire continued to burn well into the daylight hours and was only extinguished around 9:00 a.m. that day.
The Harris County Sherriff’s Office later confirmed that four workers inside the ExxonMobil Olefins Plant had been rushed to the hospital, including three who suffered flash burn injuries and a fourth who sustained a broken leg.
The explosion apparently erupted on a gasoline-producing unit and was exacerbated by Naphtha, a flammable liquid used to dilute crude oil.
ExxonMobil Baytown Complex is the 2nd Largest Refinery in the U.S.
ExxonMobil’s Baytown Complex occupies around 3,400 acres along the Houston Ship Channel.
As the second-largest refinery operation in the United States and the fourth-largest globally, it houses four manufacturing sites, including the ExxonMobil Olefins plant, one of the largest ethylene-producing plants in the world.
The Complex provides jobs to about 22,000 employees and contractors and has a production capacity of 584,000 BPD.
ExxonMobil Olefins Explosion Sent 40 to Hospital in July 2019
Unfortunately, the December 23rd explosion was the second such incident at the ExxonMobil Olefins plant in almost as many years and the third involving the ExxonMobil Baytown Complex since March 2019.
More than 40 workers were hospitalized with injuries ranging from mild to serious following an explosion at the ExxonMobil Baytown Olefins Plant on July 31, 2019. Hundreds of people living near the facility were also forced to shelter-in-place as crews worked for hours to bring the resulting fire under control.
Less than five months earlier, on March 16, 2019, a furnace fire at the Baytown Complex sent a plume of smoke and flames out into the skies over the Houston Metro Region. Although no injuries were reported, Harris County later sued ExxonMobil for alleged violations of the Texas Clean Air Act.
