Greyhound Bus Driver Appeared Intoxicated Ahead of Mississippi Crash that Injured 22

The driver of the  Greyhound bus that crashed along I-55 in Mississippi last week reportedly appeared intoxicated when she arrived at the bus terminal on the night of the accident.

Greyhound Bus Crashed Less than 2 Miles from Jackson Station

Police arrested Erika Nixon, 31, on January 2nd, shortly after her Greyhound bus overturned less than two miles from the Jackson, Mississippi terminal.

Nixon was apparently attempting to merge onto I-55 South from the Pascagoula Street ramp in heavy rain. According to one passenger, the bus flipped at least three times.

Although no one died in the crash, paramedics transferred 22 passengers to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.  At least one person suffered broken bones and is awaiting results of tests for head injuries.

Witnesses Claim Greyhound Driver Was Disoriented, Stumbling

Witnesses have since reported that Nixon was disoriented and stumbling when she arrived at the Jackson terminal on Wednesday evening. No one, however, prevented her from driving.

She later failed a breathalyzer test at the crash scene, resulting in her arrest.

According to WBLT-3 in Jackson, alcohol consumption was a frequent subject of Nixon’s social media posting. In fact, one Facebook photo even indicated that Nixon had alcohol in her purse when she interviewed with Greyhound.

Greyhound Statement on Mississippi Crash

The passenger bus company hired Nixon in June 2015.

In a statement, Greyhound maintained that its employees are “strictly prohibited from coming onto company premises, reporting to work or working with prohibited substances in their systems.”

In addition, the company noted that Nixon’s CDL was completely clear, with no restrictions or violations.

So far, however, Greyhound has not commented on reports that its driver appeared intoxicated prior to the crash.
