A 5-year-old girl was tragically injured following a Sunday morning collision in Houston that appears to have been caused by a drunk driver.
Pickup Truck Was Driving Erratically Before Colliding with Cadillac
The little girl and her family were returning from a Sweet 16 party, when a Chevy pickup truck t-boned their Cadillac near the intersection of 75th Street and Harrisburg Boulevard shortly after 1:oo a.m.
According to witnesses to the January 20th accident, the truck was swerving just before its driver ran a red light and sped through the intersection without ever applying the brakes.
“He couldn’t stay in a single lane,” Sean Teare, chief of the Harris County District Attorney’s Office’s Vehicular Crimes Division, told Click2Houston. “He passed a number of vehicles in a turn lane, ran red light and broadsided this Cadillac.”
5-Year-Old Girl Underwent Surgery for Traumatic Brain Injuries
The 5-year-old girl was transferred to Texas Children’s Hospital, where she underwent emergency surgery for traumatic brain injuries. Unfortunately, she is now on life support.
“I wouldn’t wish this on anybody,” her mother told KHOU 11-TV. “They’ve only given her a couple of hours to live, and we have all her family here.”
Paramedics took the little girl’s aunt to Ben Taub Hospital, where she is being treated for a broken collar bone, fractured ribs, and other severe injuries.
The child’s mother, her 15-year-old brother, and the truck driver’s wife were treated for minor injuries.
Pickup Truck Driver Was Allegedly Drinking at Houston Sports Bar
Isreal Suarez Lugo, 35, was arrested at the scene and has since been charged with two counts of intoxication assault.
Police responding to the crash said they could smell alcohol on Lugo’s breath. They also reported that his speech was slurred, his eyes were red and glassy, and he had trouble keeping his balance.
According to the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, Lugo may have been drinking at the Timeout #1 Sportsbar Bar off the Gulf Freeway in the hours before the accident.
“We’re going to find out if in fact he was there, and if not, where he was. We’re going to find out who was serving him and if someone overserved him,” Teare said. “This is not a minor issue, but it is an over-service issue from the evidence we’ve seen so far.”
