Five people were injured last week in an accident involving an 18-wheeler and a tour bus along I-35 North near Hillsboro, Texas.
Wet Roadway May Have Contributed to Tornado Bus Company Crash
The crash occurred just before 3:20 p.m. on Wednesday, June 20th, in the northbound lanes of the interstate, near mile-marker 364B.
Around 30 people were aboard a tour bus operated by Dallas-based Tornado Bus Company when it collided with the rig.
Four passengers and the bus driver were transferred to an area hospital, where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
It’s not clear what caused the accident. However, the Texas Department of Transportation indicated that a wet roadway may have contributed to the crash, as the area had just experienced a heavy downpour.
FMSCA Declared Tornado Bus Company “Imminent Threat to Public Safety” Following Deadly Arkansas Crash
In addition to Texas, the Tornado Bus Company provides transportation to and from Mexico from Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, North Carolina, and Tennessee.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) declared Tornado Bus an “imminent threat to public safety” in December 2007, following a crash in Arkansas that killed 3 passengers, as well as the driver of a pickup truck.
The company was forced to temporarily cease operations due to “unacceptable safety compliance,” “failure to adequately establish safety management systems,” and allowing its drivers to exceed federally-mandated maximum hours of service.
The order was issued after inspectors uncovered numerous safety violations that “substantially” increased the “likelihood of serious injury or death to Tornado’s drivers, passengers and to the motoring public.”
The FMSCA had previously fined Tornado Bus more than $57,000 between 2001 and 2007 for falsifying driver duty records and other violations.
