A pair of motorists died tragically Tuesday night, after a tour bus plowed into several vehicles along I-880 near Hayward, California.
Tour Bus Approached Stop-and-Go Traffic Before Crashing Into Lexus
The California Highway Patrol responded to the crash in the northbound lanes of the interstate, just south of the Whipple Road exit, shortly before 11:00 p.m. on October 30th.
The empty tour bus was in the middle lane approaching stop-and-go traffic, when it slammed into the back of a 1997 Lexus.
The Lexus then swerved to the left, allowing the bus to continue forward and smash into the rear of a 2011 Ford.
As a result, the Ford became compressed between the bus and the back of a UPS truck.
The bus continued its forward motion, before finally coming to rest on top of the Ford.
Hayward, San Lorenzo Motorists Died at Scene
Unfortunately, the drivers of both passenger vehicles died at the scene.
Authorities have declined to release their names pending family notification. It has been confirmed, however, that a 57-year-old woman from Hayward was behind the wheel of the Lexus.
The driver of the Ford has been identified as a 46-year-old man from San Lorenzo.
The driver of the UPS truck complained of pain in his back and neck, while the tour bus driver escaped the crash without injury.
Tour Bus Travelling at Least 65 MPH Before Fatal Crash
The cause of the accident remains under investigation. Authorities estimate, however, that the tour bus was travelling 65 mph or more before it collided with the Lexus.
They do not believe that drugs or alcohol were a factor in the fatal crash.
The drivers of the tour bus and the UPS truck are cooperating with the investigation.
The owner of the bus, San Francisco Bus and Limo Service, has reportedly not responded to any media inquiries.
