Five members of the same family, including two children, died tragically Saturday morning, after their van was involved in a horrific crash with an 18-wheeler and one other vehicle near Victoria, Texas.
Passenger Van Clipped 18-Wheeler from Behind
Emergency crews responded to reports of an accident on Highway 59 South, near the Telferner exit, shortly after 10:30 a.m. on July 20th.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, a 2019 Ford passenger van was headed north when it clipped an 18-wheeler from behind. The van then careened across the center median and entered the southbound lanes of the highway, where it collided head-on with a 2015 Ford F-150 pickup truck.
Brownsville Family was Traveling to Galveston for Cruise
Ten relatives were aboard the Ford van, all from Brownsville, Texas. The family was on their way to Galveston. where they planned to board a cruise ship Saturday afternoon.
A 6-year-old boy and 13-year-old girl were among five family members pronounced dead at the crash scene. The accident also claimed the lives of a 42-year-old woman and two men, ages 45 and 47.
7 Victoria Crash Victims Treated at Area Hospitals
The remaining five family members were hospitalized, including a 38-year-old woman airlifted to Hermann Memorial Hospital in Houston. She is currently listed in stable condition.
Paramedics also transported a 17-year-old girl, a 19-year-old man, and 21-year-old woman to DeTar Hospital North in Victoria. So far, however, authorities have not commented on the nature of their injuries or current condition.
A 13-year-old girl initially taken to Citizens Medical Center in Victoria was later transferred to University Medical Center in San Antonio. She was listed in stable condition as of Sunday.
The pickup truck driver and his wife, residents of Spring, were also taken to Citizens Medical Center. Both have since been released.
Victoria 18-Wheeler Crash Remains Under Investigation
The 18-wheeler driver did not suffer any injuries and apparently managed to pull his rig safely to the shoulder about ¼ mile from the crash scene.
So far, it’s not clear why the passenger van struck the 18-wheeler.
“We are working diligently as a department with all our resources, from emergency management to the Texas Rangers, who are aiding us in resources and any kind of equipment we need to help us better understand contributing factors that led to this crash,” Texas DPS Sgt. Ruben San Miguel of the Texas told the Victoria Advocate.
