Two people died tragically Tuesday morning, following a horrific 18-wheeler crash in Travis County, Texas, near Austin.
Semi-Truck Collided with Kia Optima Near Hays County Line
The December 1st accident occurred sometime before 11:30 p.m. along FM 1826 near the intersection with State Highway 45, just southwest of Austin and near the Hays County Line.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the 18-wheeler collided with the driver’s side of a Kia Optima, killing both occupants of the car.
The Oak Hill and Austin fire departments responded to the crash. A STAR Flight helicopter was also dispatched to the scene.
Both Victims Died at Travis County Crash Scene
The 69-year-old man driving the Kia was pronounced dead at the scene. His 70-year-old female passenger was pinned in the vehicle until EMTs were able to free her. She died shortly after, while they attempted to administer CPR.
The driver of the 18-wheeler escaped the crash uninjured. He is apparently cooperating with the accident investigation.
According to the Travis County Sheriff’s Office, all lanes of FM 1826 were shut down between SH 45 and the Hays County line until 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Travis County reported 725 accidents involving 18-wheelers and other commercial vehicles during 2019, including 17 fatal crashes that claimed 17 lives that year. These accidents also resulted in 174 serious and non-incapacitating injuries.
In the wake of Tuesday’s fatal crash, the Texas DPS urged motorists to minimize distractions, avoid driving fatigued or intoxicated, obey traffic control devices, and always wear a safety belt.
