A 46-year-old woman from El Paso, Texas died tragically this weekend, after an 18-wheeler jackknifed and hit her BMW along I-20 just outside of Abilene.
Tire Blowout Caused 18-Wheeler to Jackknife
The deadly accident occurred shortly after 1:00 Sunday afternoon at Mile Marker 314, between Baird and Putnam. According to the Abilene-Reporter News, a 2011 Freightliner truck with trailer in tow was traveling westbound when its right-front tire blew out. The 18-wheeler jackknifed before crashing through the median cable onto the eastbound lanes of the road.
Kimberly Belinda Carrillo was traveling eastbound on I-20 when the rig stuck her 1999 BMW. Her vehicle was run off the road, and her car came to rest in a ditch.
First responders performed CPR on Carillo before she was transported via ambulance to Hendrick Medical Center with severe injuries. Sadly, she was pronounced dead upon arrival.
According to KTXS.com, Carillo is survived by a son and daughter, as well as two grandchildren. She also left behind a fiancé. Carillo’s family said she was traveling from El Paso to Waco when her life was taken.
The truck driver, Aubrey Cossiah, 42, of Conyers, Georgia, escaped the crash without injury.
Westbound traffic along 1-20 remained at a standstill until Sunday evening, as crews worked to investigate the crash and clear the scene.
The Texas Department of Public Safety’s investigation into the accident is ongoing.
