2 Tanks Exploded at Tellus Operating Group Site
The September 19th explosion occurred shortly after 8:20 a.m. and involved two stationary storage tanks located on a Tellus Operating Group site near the intersection of Fred West and Gatlin Roads.
According to the Laurel Leader-Times, sources described the scene as a “big production site” and said crude oil “was all over the place.”
The resulting fire spread to a nearby wooded area. Once fire crews arrived, they were able to extinguish the blaze in about 30 minutes.
L&D Scrap Contractor Killed in Mississippi Oilfield Explosion
Seven workers were onsite when the tanks exploded, including a 59-year-old man who died in the blast. Authorities identified the victim as a contractor with L&D Scrap of Laurel, Mississippi.
Fortunately, all of the other workers were able to escape the explosion unharmed.
The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) later confirmed that some oil released by the tank explosion had breached containment. Cleanup efforts are currently underway, and it doesn’t appear that any water sources were affected by the spill.
So far, it’s not clear what caused the Mississippi oilfield explosion. Tellus Operating Group, which operates over 400 oil and natural gas wells in Louisiana and Mississippi, is cooperating with the MDEQ’s investigation.
