Two people died tragically yesterday afternoon, following a violent collision that involved a Megabus and three other vehicles.
Kia Sorento Careened Off Interstate, Went Airborne
The April 10th accident occurred around 2:30 p.m. along I-45, just north of Conroe, Texas, in Walker County.
According to various media reports, a Kia Sorento was traveling in the northbound lanes of the intestate when it suddenly veered off the highway and struck a culvert in the grassy medium.
The Sorento went airborne and crashed into a Nissan Altima that had been traveling in the southbound lanes. The Kia then slammed into a southbound Chevy Malibu.
The Megabus, which was on its way to Houston from Dallas with 75 people aboard, was unable to stop and collided with the rest of the pileup.
“I just panicked, really,” one Megabus passenger told ABC13. “I saw wires pop up, then I seen two cars coming toward the bus.”
1 Motorist Died at Scene, Another After Being Airlifted to Hospital
The driver of the Kia Sorento was killed on impact and pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Malibu – a 51-year-old woman from Alvin – was airlifted to Memorial Hermann Hospital in the Texas Medical Center. She later died of her injuries.
Though the impact of the collision was enough to tilt the Megabus for an instant, two passengers sustained only minor injuries.
The driver of the Nissan Altima escaped the crash unharmed.
Megabus Crash Occurred in I-45 Construction Zone
It’s not yet known what caused the Kia Sorento to veer off the highway.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, that area of I-45 is currently under construction, with the speed limit reduced from 75 mph to 65 mph in the construction zone.
“We’d like everyone to pay a little bit more attention, be cognizant of your surroundings and be safe on the road,” Texas DPS Sgt. Erik Burse told reporters.
