A motorist was injured this afternoon when an 18-wheeler plummeted from the Highway 59 Southwest Freeway Overpass in Sugar Land, Texas, landing upside down on top of her car.
Rig Jackknifed as Driver Attempted to Avoid Another Accident
The bizarre accident occurred around 1:15 p.m. on Thursday, along southbound Highway 59 at University Boulevard.
The driver of the 18-wheeler was trying to avoid a 3-vehicle accident when his rig jackknifed and crashed off of the overpass, flipping on to the service road below.
The semi landed on top of a Toyota sedan, smashing the roof of the car.
Fortunately, the 18-wheeler was hauling an empty load, otherwise the Toyota would have been crushed.
Passing Motorist Helped Toyota Driver Escape Vehicle Via Back Window
The woman driving the Toyota was able to escape her car with the assistance of a passing motorist.
“I went all around the car, and finally I saw the woman’s face, and she was like asking for help, so I had to pull back some of the 18-wheeler’s plysheet and I crawled under and I tried to open her door, but both doors were jammed,” Lori Lowry told KPRC-TV.
“Luckily, the back-door window was open, so I had her crawl out of the back window.”
The woman was taken to a nearby hospital, as was the 18-wheeler driver. Their injuries are not considered to be life-threatening.
Debris from the 18-wheeler damaged another car, but no one in that vehicle was injured.
