Texas Man Tragically Killed When 18-Wheeler Collides With 3 Others Along I-10 Near Grosse Tete, Louisiana

A tragic wreck along Interstate 10 near Grosse Tete, Louisiana, tragically claimed the life of an elderly truck driver yesterday morning.

18-Wheeler Driver was Standing on I-10 Shoulder

The July 25th crash occurred shortly after 8:00 a.m.

According to the Louisiana State Police, the 82-year-old Texas man and another trucker had pulled their rigs to the shoulder because of an earlier accident. He was apparently standing in the shoulder when a westbound 18-wheeler struck a fourth tractor-trailer from behind.

The third truck then veered onto the shoulder, where it slammed into the parked 18-wheelers.

The victim was pronounced dead at the crash scene. The other truckers suffered only minor to moderate injuries.

18-Wheeler Driver Could Face Charges from I-10 Crash

Although law enforcement officials do not suspect impairment was a factor, they are awaiting results from toxicology tests.

The I-10 18-wheeler accident remains under investigation. According to police, charges could still be pending against the responsible driver.

Over 800 Truckers Killed on the Job in 2017

Unfortunately, trucking remains one of the most dangerous occupations in the nation.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 840 truckers died on the job in 2017, up more than 6% from the previous year. The fatality rate among truckers that year was about 26.8 deaths per 10,000 workers, compared with roughly 3.5 deaths per 10,000 for all professions.

At least 38% of truck drivers killed on the job in 2017 weren’t using seat belts. Driver-fatigue and drowsy driving also contributed to a significant percentage of fatal 18-wheeler crashes.
