Austin police have arrested a 37-year-old truck driver in connection with a devastating chain-reaction crash that left five dead and at least 11 others seriously injured on Interstate 35 on March 13.
Amazon Truck Driver Arrested for Intoxication Manslaughter
According to the Austin Police Department, the driver—a contractor transporting goods for Amazon—was intoxicated at the time of the crash. He now faces five counts of intoxication manslaughter with a vehicle and two counts of intoxication assault with a vehicle causing serious bodily injury.
Although the driver is not an Amazon employee, few drivers tasked with making Amazon deliveries actually work for the company directly.
Instead, Amazon relies on third-party contractors like ZBN Transport LLC, the trucking company that has employed the driver for the past four months.
ZBN Transport LLC stated that the driver had no prior safety violations or known issues during his tenure and that a background check before hiring revealed no red flags.
Details of the I-35 Crash Remain Unclear
Authorities have yet to release a full account of how the crash occurred. However, early reports indicate that it triggered a catastrophic chain reaction involving at least 17 vehicles on I-35 southbound near Parmer Lane around 11:30 p.m. last night, leading to multiple serious injuries and fatalities.
Investigators are working to determine the sequence of events, including whether the truck was speeding, following too closely, or otherwise driving erratically before impact. One witness told Austin news outlet KXAN that the truck was going over 80 mph when it collided with stopped traffic.
I-35 was shut down for several hours as emergency crews responded to the scene.
5 Dead, 11 More Injured
The tragic collision claimed the lives of five victims at the scene, including three adults, a child, and an infant.
At least 17 others suffered injuries, with 11 hospitalized. Five—four adults and one child—are in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.
Deadly Amazon Trucking Accidents On The Rise
In the last two years alone, at least 57 people have been killed in more than four dozen collisions involving Amazon’s trucking contractors.
Despite Amazon’s recognizable branding, most drivers operating its semi-trucks work for third-party trucking firms like ZBN Transport LLC—not Amazon itself. This decentralized “middle-mile” approach allows Amazon to scale its operations while avoiding direct responsibility for many of the risks associated with its trucking fleet. It has also introduced significant safety risks.
One recent CBS News investigation revealed that trucking companies handling Amazon’s freight have monthly violation rates—such as speeding and texting while driving—twice as high as other carriers, according to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) data.
Legal Options for Victims & Families
While the intoxicated driver faces criminal charges, victims and their families also have a right to seek the justice and compensation they deserve for all of their injuries and losses.
From the moment of impact, a large corporation and its insurance company will have the resources to bring in an army of attorneys and investigators to achieve one goal: save money by paying you and you and your family as little as possible, even if that means blaming you for the crash, questioning and downplaying your injuries, and doing anything else necessary to call your credibility into question.
