It appears a blown tire may have triggered a deadly 18-Wheeler accident along I-12 that left 2 people dead in Livingston Parish, Louisiana, last Friday afternoon.
Truckers Killed When 18-Wheelers Erupted in Flames
The September 13th crash occurred shortly before 12:30 p.m., when a westbound 18-wheeler collided with a Toyota Highlander travelling in the same direction.
The impact of the collision sent both vehicles across the I-12 median, where the 18-wheeler slammed head-on into an eastbound semi-truck. The rigs erupted in flames, killing both drivers and igniting a fireball that could be seen for miles.
The Toyota landed on its roof in front of the deadly inferno and began to melt.
Lone Survivor of I-12 18-Wheeler Crash Recalls Possible Blown Tire
The Toyota driver was the sole survivor of the crash.
In an interview with WAFB 9, she suggested the first truck blew a tire before striking her SUV.
“He swerved right like he was getting off [the interstate], then over-corrected and swerved left into my lane,” she said
“I was hanging upside down, trying to stay calm,” she continued. “I think I passed out at that point because the next thing I remember was a sound, like gunshots, with little bursts of light.
The woman later learned that one of the 18-wheelers was hauling acetone. The acetone bottles were like little bombs, exploding as they came in contact with flames.
Acetone Bottles Fed Livingston Parish 18-Wheeler Fire
Because of the intense heat, first responders struggled to free the victim from her Toyota.
“All I could hear was chaos outside my car. Couldn’t tell what I was hearing,” she remembered. “When I realized that everything was feeling hot, [I knew] something worse was wrong.”
Fortunately, she was able to unbuckle the seatbelt and crawl out of the wreckage. As she emerged from what was left of her SUV, the woman was horrified by what she saw.
“Everything is crystal clear up to the point I realized things were on fire. I was calm and handled everything ok until I realized everything was on fire. I just started screaming.”
