Worker Tragically Killed at Corrugated Concepts & Packaging Plant in Houston

A horrific accident tragically claimed the life of a packaging plant worker in northeast Houston on Saturday.

Corrugated Concepts Worker Became Trapped in Bailer

The Houston Police Department responded to reports of an incident at Corrugated Concepts and Packaging, located at 5050 Campbell Road, shortly before 10:30 a.m. on January 11th.

Initial reports indicated that the 46-year-old man had been crushed inside machinery used to compact and bail cardboard boxes. Since then, police have confirmed the victim was repairing a bailer that had been leaking oil. Another employee apparently failed to see the deceased and turned on the machine while he was inside.

Sadly, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Crush Injuries at Plants and Construction Sites

According to the U.S. Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA), around 125,000 workers are injured every year when body parts become caught between two objects or entangled in machinery. Injuries may range from bruises, cuts, and scalping to mangled and amputated body parts, and even death.

Crush injuries are most common on construction sites but can also occur in the trucking and manufacturing industries, or any occupation that involves the use of heavy equipment or machinery. To ensure worker safety, plant operators and other employers are required to identify and control potential crush hazards, including:

  • Machinery that has unguarded moving parts.
  • Materials that may shift or collapse and bury a worker.
  • Situations where workers may become pinned between a moving object and a stationary one or between two moving objects.

To control hazards, employers must:

  • Ensure that machinery is properly guarded and prevent workers from removing guards.
  • Secure or block any objects or equipment to ensure they do not shift, cycle, or move unexpectedly.
  • Increase awareness of pinning hazards among workers and ensure employees are never between moving equipment, such as forklifts, and immovable structures, other vehicles, or stacked materials.
