Tragedy struck early Wednesday morning when a multi-vehicle crash on the Southwest Freeway U.S. 59 at Kirby left one person dead and three others seriously injured.

Passenger Vehicle Hits Barricade, Initiating Deadly Chain-Reaction Crash

According to the Houston Police Department, the deadly collision began around 2 a.m. when a passenger vehicle struck a barricade on a southbound lane of Southwest Freeway U.S. 59 near the Kirby exit. The initial impact triggered a chain reaction involving two additional vehicles, resulting in devastating consequences.

Authorities at the scene noted that the driver of the first vehicle showed signs of impairment.

Driver Jumps From Freeway To Avoid Oncoming Traffic

After hitting the barricade, the driver of the initial vehicle exited his car, which came to a stop in the freeway lanes. Moments later, a second vehicle crashed into the stopped car, forcing the driver to jump from the elevated portion of the Southwest Freeway onto Greenbriar below in an effort to avoid being struck.

A third vehicle then collided with the second car, compounding the already tragic situation.

1 Dead, 1 in Critical Condition

Tragically, the driver of the second vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the initial vehicle, who jumped onto Greenbriar below, was rushed to the hospital and remains unresponsive in critical condition.

Two individuals in the third vehicle, including the driver and a passenger, were also transported to the hospital to treat serious injuries.

Authorities Investigating the Deadly Houston Car Crash — Impaired Driving Likely Involved

Houston Police Department officials reopened the southbound lanes of US-59 at Kirby by 5:45 a.m. Investigators are now working to determine whether impairment played a role in the crash and if any criminal charges will be filed.

The Growing Dangers of Texas Chain-Reaction Car Accidents

Chain-reaction crashes are some of the deadliest car accidents on the road—and tragically, they are almost always preventable. These devastating collisions often result from the reckless or impaired actions of just one driver, putting countless others at risk.

When a driver chooses to get behind the wheel while impaired or engages in reckless behavior like speeding or failing to pay attention, the consequences can be catastrophic, triggering multi-vehicle accidents that endanger everyone nearby.

As this recent tragedy on US-59 shows, it takes only one careless decision to set off a deadly chain of events.

When another’s negligence causes you or a loved one harm, you have the right to hold them fully accountable — and you deserve the best legal team you can find to help secure justice and your future.
