1 Dead, At Least 4 Injured Following Fatal 18-Wheeler Hit and Run

The crash occurred just after 7 p.m. on Friday night, January 31, 2025, at the intersection of 11400 South Sam Houston Parkway East and Sabo Road.

According to the Houston Police Department, five vehicles were stopped at a red light when the 18-wheeler slammed into the back of a Chevrolet Cavalier, killing the 44-year-old driver inside and injuring his 9-year-old son in the passenger seat.

The 18-wheeler did not stop but continued striking four more vehicles before fleeing the scene. A woman driving a Lexus RX350 was critically injured, and additional injuries were reported among the occupants of a Chevrolet Tahoe and a Ford Crown Victoria. The 18-wheeler also struck a Toyota of an unknown model before escaping the scene.

Why Do Some Truck Drivers Flee the Scene?

Hit-and-run crashes involving 18-wheelers are particularly alarming due to the immense destruction these vehicles can cause — weighing up to 20 times that of a car.

Fleeing the scene of an accident is illegal, but truck drivers still make the reckless decision to leave for various reasons, including:

  • Fear of Criminal Charges: If the driver was speeding, impaired, or in violation of trucking regulations, they may flee to avoid arrest.
  • Suspended, Revoked License or No CDL: Some truck drivers operate without valid commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs) or even insurance, making them far more likely to run.
  • Pressure from Employers: Certain trucking companies impose unrealistic deadlines, encouraging unsafe driving behaviors and leaving drivers fearful of job loss.
  • Mechanical Failures or Overloaded Cargo: If the truck was improperly maintained or overloaded, the driver or employer may try to avoid liability by disappearing.

Regardless of the reason, fleeing the scene of a crash is a criminal offense. Families impacted by hit-and-run truck accidents not only deserve justice, they deserve a legal team with the experience and resources needed to hold negligent drivers and their employers fully accountable.
