A devastating 17-vehicle pileup involving an 18-wheeler on Interstate 35 in North Austin late Thursday night left five people dead, including an infant and a child.

Semi Truck Involved in Deadly Pileup

The massive collision occurred around 11:23 p.m. on March 13, along I-35 southbound near Parmer Lane. According to officials, the scene was incredibly chaotic, with wreckage spanning over a tenth of a mile. Austin-Travis County EMS reported that multiple victims were trapped inside their vehicles following the crash.

All lanes of I-35 southbound were shut down for hours, forcing traffic onto local toll roads between State Highway 45 and U.S. 290 East, with toll fees temporarily waived.

3 Adults, 2 Children Killed in Fatal Truck Accident & At Least 12 More Hospitalized

Five people — three adults, a child, and an infant — were tragically pronounced dead at the scene.

At least 17 others sustained injuries, with 11 rushed to nearby hospitals, including three children—one with potentially life-threatening injuries. At least two adults remain in critical condition.

Investigation Now Underway into Deadly Truck Crash

Authorities are now working to determine what caused this deadly chain-reaction crash

Given the involvement of an 18-wheeler, investigators will likely examine whether truck driver negligence, fatigue, speeding, distracted driving, or mechanical failure played a role.

In our experience, crashes like this are almost always entirely preventable. Whether due to reckless driving, poor maintenance, or pressure from trucking companies to meet unrealistic deadlines, these tragic accidents often stem from choices that put profit over safety.

Unfortunately, it is almost always those in passenger vehicles who suffer the most in collisions with 18-wheelers. The sheer size and weight of a fully loaded semi-truck make these crashes especially devastating — as does the potential for an underride collision, when a smaller vehicle slides beneath the rear of a big rig or under the side of its trailer — often resulting in catastrophic injuries and loss of life for those in smaller vehicles.
