Fracking has exploded across the United States, especially in Texas. As a result, companies are setting up fracking locations throughout Texas in rural and farming areas with infrastructure not meant to handle large commercial trucks.
With increased traffic on roads not built for heavy, commercial vehicles, more accidents are bound to happen. Unfortunately, one of these accidents occurred this month when several oil field workers died in a highway crash near a South Texas oil field.
Oil Field Workers Killed in South Texas Crash
Five oil field workers tragically died after their van crashed into a crude oil tanker truck. As a result of the crash, the tanker truck burst into flames. The crash occurred around 7:00 a.m. in Dimmit County in the Eagle Ford Shale energy sector. Three other workers also suffered injuries in the accident.
A pickup truck travelling in front of a crude oil tanker made a left turn off a state highway. According to one state trooper, “the tractor-trailer that was behind the pickup took evasive action to miss it as it was turning, and lost control and turned over.” The tanker, which had been carrying crude oil, remained on the road. Two vehicles that had been travelling behind the tanker ran into the tanker. Immediately, the vehicles became engulfed in flames.
The five oil field workers who had been traveling in the van died from the explosion. A driver in another vehicle suffered burns over 85% of his body. Emergency responders airlifted the man to a local hospital in San Antonio where the man remained in critical condition. Authorities are still investigating the accident to determine the cause.
