Falling Equipment a Leading Cause of Oilfield Worker Deaths
Oil and gas workers are seven times more likely to suffer a serious injury on the job compared to workers in all other industries.
According to the U.S. Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA), struck-by/caught-in/caught-between hazards are responsible for three out of every five work-related deaths reported in the oil and gas industry every year. The majority of these hazards involve moving vehicles or equipment, high-pressure lines, and falling objects and equipment.
Oil and gas companies are required to comply with specific OSHA regulations intended to minimize these hazards. For example, they must provide hard hats and other necessary equipment to protect workers from falling objects. Companies are also required to perform daily inspections, see that all rigging equipment is properly maintained and in good repair, and ensure workers receive the training needed to perform their jobs safely.
