An accident at a Dewitt County oilfield has tragically claimed the life of a Texas construction worker.
Dewitt County Oilfield Worker Likely Hit by Truck
According to the DeWitt County Sheriff’s Office, the 34-year-old New Braunfels man was working on an oilfield construction site located in the 1500 block of Farm-to-Market Road 443. He apparently sustained severe injuries sometime on the morning of September 4th.
While it’s not clear how the Jet Maintenance contractor was hurt, it appears he was signing tractor-trailers into the Dewitt County oilfield the day of the fatal accident. Authorities believe an 18-wheeler unknowingly struck the worker as it left the site.
It was likely five to 10 minutes before his co-workers found the injured man.
Oilfield Worker’s Death Remains Under Investigation
Dewitt County Chief Deputy John V. Garoni told the Victoria Advocate that investigators have identified the truck driver. Although they’ve found no reason to charge anyone with a crime, he stressed the investigation was in an early stage.
The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration is also looking into the fatal Dewitt County oilfield accident. That investigation will focus on any workplace safety violations that might have contributed to the contractor’s death.
Motor Vehicle Accidents Leading Cause of Oilfield Fatalities
According to the National Institute of Occupational Safety & Health, motor vehicle crashes cause more than 50% of the work-related fatalities in the oil and natural gas extraction industry.
While pick-up trucks historically caused the greatest number of fatal accidents, large oilfield trucks became the most common type of vehicle in 2017.
