A contract worker died tragically late last week, following a fire at a hurricane-damaged refinery in Lake Charles, Louisiana.
Contractor Sustained Burns to 60% – 80% of His Body
The Lake Charles Fire Department received calls about a fire at the Calcasieu Refining facility located along West Tank Farm Road shortly before 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 17th. According to a preliminary investigation, workers were cutting on a stack housing damaged by Hurricane Laura when oil somehow ignited.
The deceased worker suffered burns to 60% to 80% percent of his body and fell approximately 15 feet when his safety harness failed. A medical helicopter was supposed to fly the victim to Lafayette General Hospital but diverted to Lake Charles Memorial due to his rapidly deteriorating condition.
So far, authorities have not released the dead worker’s name or identified his employer. The blaze remains under investigation.
Calcasieu Refining Idled Since August
A subsidiary of Houston, Texas-based Transworld Oil USA Inc, Calcasieu Refining can process up to 135,500 barrels of crude oil each day. The facility’s products include liquefied petroleum gas, naphtha, kerosene, and diesel, all of which are transported for sale by barge, pipeline, and tanker truck.
Although Calcasieu Refining usually employs around 122 workers when fully operational, the plant has been idle since mid-August due to the recent oil slump.
According to an email sent to the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality, some areas of the refinery sustained “moderate to severe” damage last month during Hurricane Laura.
