Two people died tragically and three others were injured – including two children — when an Amazon 18-wheeler slammed into several passenger vehicles along I-45 in Houston early last Friday morning.
Amazon Truck Plowed into Earlier Crash Site
The April 10th accident occurred around 1:30 a.m., as a red Lincoln Navigator was towing a trailer in the southbound lanes of the freeway. According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, a gray Mazda sedan crashed into the trailer when the SUV attempted to pull off the highway near Rankin Road. The Mazda then spun sideways and came to rest in the middle of the highway.
The driver of a grey Chevy Silverado pickup apparently swerved to avoid the Mazda, but lost control of his vehicle and collided with a concrete wall. The pickup ricocheted off the wall, spun across the highway, and came to rest near the Mazda.
The driver of a white Chevrolet then stopped to render assistance.
Crash Victims Were Pinned Beneath Amazon Truck
At some point, a woman in the SUV and the man driving the Mazda left their vehicles. They were standing on the side of the roadway when the Amazon truck suddenly plowed through the crash site, colliding with all four vehicles. Both victims were pinned beneath the 18-wheeler and died at the scene.
The two children – ages 1 and 3 – were properly restrained inside the Navigator and suffered minor injuries. Fortunately, they are expected to make a full recovery.
The driver of the Chevy pickup was forced to jump some 15 feet from the freeway overpass to avoid being run over by the Amazon 18-wheeler. While his injuries are considered serious, he is also expected to make a full recovery.
Amazon 18-Wheeler Accident Remains Under Investigation
Last Friday’s violent chain-reaction crash remains under investigation.
Although there were no heavy rains at the time, authorities have suggested a slick roadway might have contributed to the accident. At this time, they do not believe driver intoxication was a factor.
“This is a terrible incident and our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with all involved,” Amazon said in a statement. “We will work with law enforcement and the carrier as they investigate.”
