Safety hazards that could result in untended vehicle movement or sudden engine failure have forced the Ford Motor Company to recall thousands of its popular F-150 pickup trucks.
15,000 2018 Ford F-150 Trucks Recalled for Shift Lever Problems
The first of the recent recalls involves around 15,000 model year 2018 F-150 trucks outfitted with 3.3-liter engines, six-speed automatic transmissions, and a column-mounted shift lever.
Ford is warning that drivers may experience a faulty transmission shift when they quickly shift from PARK to DRIVE. This can cause unintended vehicle movement, loss of PRNDL gear indication in the instrument cluster, and the momentary engagement of REVERSE operation in DRIVE and NEUTRAL operation in REVERSE.
Affected vehicles include:
- 2018 Ford F-150 trucks built at Dearborn Assembly Plant, January 12, 2017 to October 9, 2017
- 2018 Ford F-150 trucks built at Kansas City Assembly Plant, January 30, 2017 to October 9, 2017
The majority of the recalled trucks – 12,429 – were sold in the United States, while 2,023 were sold in Canada and 579 in Mexico.
To fix the problem, dealers will program the trucks’ powertrain control module with the latest level calibration software free of charge.
Drivers are being advised to carefully and deliberately move the shift lever into the desired gear and confirm gear selection in the PRNDL display while they await repairs.
15,000 2017 Ford F-150 Trucks Recalled for Shifting Problems
The second recall affects approximately 15,000 model year 2017 Ford F-150 trucks with 10-speed automatic transmissions.
According to Ford, the roll pin that attaches the transmission shift linkage to the transmission may come out. Such an occurrence could cause unintended movement and other problems that increase the risk of an accident.
Dealers will remove the roll pin and replace it with an updated part at no cost to the customer. Until their vehicle is repaired, drivers of the affected Ford F-150 trucks should make sure the parking brake is applied whenever the vehicle is parked.
Affected vehicles include:
- 2017 Ford F-150 vehicles built at Kansas City Assembly Plant, September 16, 2016 to August 9, 2017
- 2017 Ford F-150 vehicles built at Dearborn Assembly Plant, August 23, 2016 to July 2, 2017
Approximately 1,783 of these trucks were sold in the United States, while 3,169 were sold in Canada and 701 in Mexico.
30 2018 Ford F-150 Trucks Recalled for Potential Engine Failure
Ford is also recalling 30 model year 2018 Ford F-150 trucks with 3.5-liter engines because of a potential for sudden engine failure.
According to Ford, the vehicles’ engines may have faulty cylinder heads that lack proper camshaft lubrication. This can cause premature engine failure and loss of motive power without warning while driving, increasing the risk of accident or injury.
Affected vehicles include:
- 2018 Ford F-150 trucks built at Dearborn Assembly Plant, September 3-16, 2017
Ford believes that all of the affected vehicles – 22 in the United States, 7 in Canada, and 1 in Mexico – remain with dealers.
If an F-150 trucks involved in this recall is in the possession of an owner, arrangements will be made to transport the vehicle to a dealer so that the engine can be replaced at no cost to the customer.
