Two oilfield workers were seriously injured yesterday, after an oil tank battery exploded in a rural area of north La Salle County, Texas, near Dilley.
Emergency crews were called to the Ledwig Ranch around 10:45 a.m. on Tuesday, where Carrizo Oil & Gas operates the Seal-Lehman Central Production facility.
Crews arrived to find several upright storage tanks engulfed in flames. The cause of the explosion is currently under investigation.
Our Oil Field Accident Lawyers are also conducting an independent investigation and will update our site with additional information as soon as it becomes available.
Two Injured Oilfield Workers Airlifted to San Antonio Hospital
The two workers injured in the explosion were airlifted to the San Antonio Military Medical Center, where they are listed in stable condition. Their names have not been released.
“The call for helicopter transport should not be interpreted as injuries having been severe or life threatening,” a statement from the La Salle County Sheriff’s Office said.
The statement noted that injured oilfield workers are often airlifted, regardless of the severity of their injuries, as it is the quickest mode of transport.
The La Salle County Fire Rescue and Emergency Management Services indicated that the main fire had burned itself out. However, peripheral fires were still burning.
Firefighters established ¼ mile perimeter around the tanks to prevent people from wandering into the area. Crews remained on the scene yesterday afternoon to ensure the fires died out and prevent the flames from spreading.
The Seal-Lehman Central Production facility was shut after the explosion and all fluids were contained in the secondary firewall.
Texas Railroad Commission Deploys Inspector to Explosion Site
The Texas Railroad Commission sent an inspector to the site on Tuesday to begin its investigation.
“Our inspector will determine if the facility is in compliance with (Railroad Commission) rules,” a commission spokesperson told the San Antonio Express-News.
Carrizo Oil & Gas reported the tank explosion to the Commission but hasn’t provided any other details.
The company operates on about 104,000 net acres in the Eagle Ford Shale, mostly in La Salle County.
