When Hurricane Harvey brought historic flooding to the Houston area last month, thousands of volunteers from throughout Texas and the United States came together, like never before, to help Houstonians stranded by the rising flood waters.
Zehl & Associates is proud to have been part of that effort.
Hurricane Harvey Rescue Missions Made Possible with Borrowed Busses and a Smartphone App
On August 28th, 29th and 30th, Ryan Zehl and several of his coworkers drove charter busses borrowed from a friend to shuttle hundreds of flood victims to safety from some of West Houston’s most inundated neighborhoods.
Zello, a walkie talkie app that can be downloaded onto smartphones, enabled the volunteers to identify the parts of Houston that were in most need.
The same app allowed the team to coordinate with the Army and National Guard, as well as friends who were using their boats to navigate the city’s flooded streets.
Those with boats were deployed throughout West Houston to rescue the stranded from their flooded homes and apartments.
The rescued were then taken to a safe location, where they could board one of the busses driven by Mr. Zehl and his coworkers. From there, they were driven to various shelters around the city.
