The driver of an 18-wheeler involved in a deadly multi-vehicle accident near Pharr, Texas last week has been arraigned on manslaughter charges.
The fatal crash occurred around 1:00 p.m. last Friday, July 28th, on the Expressway 83/281 interchange going from San Juan to Pharr.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the driver of a Nissan Ultima died at the scene. Five other people, including the driver of the 18-wheeler, were transported to a local hospital.
18-Wheeler Driver Made Unsafe Lane Change
The driver of the rig, 35-year-old Randy Ramos of Alice, Texas, has been charged with manslaughter in connection with the 18-wheeler accident.
Sgt. Michael Mendoza of the Pharr Police Department said that Ramos made an unsafe lane change, causing his truck to clip the Nissan Ultima. The 18-wheeler struck several vehicles before it finally came to a stop.
The Department’s preliminary investigation indicated that speed may have also played a role in the crash.
“Be alert. Don’t take a chance and get on the interchange at the last minute,” Sgt. Mendoza told KRGV TV. “That’s what causes these accidents. People don’t judge the distance properly and end up cutting people off causing accidents.”
Ramos was arraigned Saturday in Pharr Municipal Court, with bail set at $150,000. Family members of the deceased were present for the arraignment.
