Five workers were hurt late Thursday afternoon after an explosion triggered a fire at the Texas International Terminals in Galveston, Texas.
Galveston Flash Fire Occurred During Maintenance Work
The explosion took place around 3:00 p.m. at the Texas International Terminals facility located on the 4800 block of Old Port Industrial Road, near the Port of Galveston.
Emergency responders arrived to find the fire from the explosion already contained, with no reports of chemical spills, leaks, or threats to the public.
The incident injured five contractors performing maintenance on equipment at the facility.
Three Suffer Burn Injuries; All Five Hospitalized
Three of the injured workers sustained burn injuries, while two others suffered non-burn-related injuries. All five were transported to UTMB Galveston for medical treatment.
Authorities confirmed that none of the injuries are life-threatening, although the specific nature of each injury has not been disclosed.
Explosion Happened During Valve Installation on a Crude Oil Pipe
The Galveston County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the incident. A spokesperson for Texas International Terminals confirmed that the explosion occurred during the installation of a valve on a crude oil pipe, leading to a flash fire.
Texas International Terminals, owned by Sullivan Brothers Family, operates a major liquid and dry bulk storage facility that supports leading ethanol, phosphate, and agricultural producers. The site also houses a 45,000-barrel-per-day refinery — recognized as the world’s newest refinery, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration — which was added in 2022.
Dangers of Valves and Worker Safety in Hazardous Environments
Valve-related tasks, particularly on crude oil pipelines, present significant risks to workers due to the high-pressure systems and flammable materials involved. Improper installation, faulty equipment, or even a small error in procedure can lead to devastating consequences, including explosions, flash fires, and chemical leaks.
However, there’s a common theme in every plant, refinery and oilfield explosion case that we’ve been involved with: every single explosion was preventable.
The majority of these incidents are not accidents—they are the direct result of employers cutting corners, ignoring safety protocols, or prioritizing profits over the well-being of their workers.
Employers have a duty to protect their workers by maintaining the highest safety standards. This includes ensuring equipment is meticulously inspected and maintained, providing workers with thorough training and protective gear, and implementing rigorous safety protocols for every task.
Failing to do so puts lives on the line and leaves hardworking individuals to bear the consequences of corporate negligence.
