A tragic DWI truck crash left one person dead and three others seriously injured, and caused a portion of Loop 820 to shut down early Thursday morning in Fort Worth, Texas.
18-Wheeler Rear-Ended Multiple Cars on Loop 820 Northbound
The September 19th accident occurred overnight, around 1:30 a.m., when the 18-wheeler plowed into the back of at least two vehicles, including a sedan and SUV, heading northbound on Loop 820.
Northbound lanes of Loop 820 at White Settlement Road were closed for several hours as officers responded to the scene.
1 Tragically Killed, 3 Injured in Fatal 18-Wheeler Rear-End Crash
According to the police, the force of the collision tragically claimed the life of the sedan’s driver, while three passengers in the SUV were critically injured and taken to a local hospital.
The condition of the injured passengers remains unknown at this time.
Authorities shut down the northbound lanes for several hours as investigators worked to determine whether additional vehicles were involved in the wreck and to assess whether the crash triggered a chain-reaction.
Driver Could Face DWI Charges from Loop 820 Crash
Police expect to charge the driver of the 18-wheeler with a DWI-related offense. The driver of the truck was also taken to the hospital and is now in custody.
It’s illegal, for obvious reasons, to operate an 18-wheeler or other large commercial truck while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Federal and state regulations prohibit truckers from using or possessing alcohol while on duty.
However, alcohol-related crashes are among the most common — and deadliest — truck accidents in Texas. This reckless conduct can easily cause a big rig to rear-end another vehicle, resulting in fatalities and injuries that are entirely preventable.
