An explosion at a manufacturing plant in south-central Pennsylvania left three workers injured yesterday afternoon, including two who were airlifted from the scene.

13 Agencies Responded to Pennsylvania Plant Explosion

The June 11th explosion erupted sometime before 7:30 a.m. at the Johnson Controls facility located at 100 Cumberland Valley Avenue in Waynesboro, near the Maryland border. Thirteen agencies responded to the scene, including area fire and EMS departments and the two medical helicopters. 

According to Franklin County officials, the helicopters flew one of the injured workers to WellSpan York Hospital in Pennsylvania, while the other was airlifted to the burn unit at  Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore. An ambulance transported the third injured worker to Meritus Medical Center near Hagerstown, Maryland.

So far, none of the injured workers have been identified. Authorities have also not released any additional information regarding the nature of their injuries or their current condition.

Johnson Controls Explosion Under Investigation

There’s also no word on the cause of the Johnson Controls explosion or the extent of any damage to the facility. The U.S. Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) is reportedly investigating the incident.

Johnson Controls is an industrial conglomerate based in Cork, Ireland. The Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, plant manufactures a number of the company’s products, including industrial HVAC systems used by data centers. The facility also houses a test site for large screw compressors that support refrigeration and gas compression applications in the oil and gas and process industries.

“The safety and well-being of our employees is our top priority, and we are actively assessing the situation and working with local response teams,” Johnson Control said in a statement issued yesterday. “We will provide more information as appropriate as we learn more.”
