When many people think of pets, they think of the typical choices, like dogs and cats. However, some animal owners have a different idea of an ideal pet, more along the lines of something exotic and unique.
Before obtaining any pet in Texas, you may have many questions, like “Can you have a pet monkey in Texas?” or “Are ferrets legal in Texas?” Like every other state, Texas has its own laws regarding pets and animal ownership.
Five of the more popular animals that are illegal pets in Texas, according to an injury lawyer include:
1. Tigers
Tigers are beautiful, majestic creatures. But as much as you may see a tiger as a large housecat, these animals require much more care than one may be able to provide. For this reason, many tigers are kept in less-than-ideal conditions, endangering not only the tiger but its caretakers as well.
Once upon a time, it was legal to own a tiger in Texas as long as you had a valid Certificate of Registration. However, in 2022, the Big Cat Public Safety Act was enacted, making private possession and breeding of big cats illegal. Along with tigers, the Act also prohibits ownership of other big cats, such as lions, leopards, and cheetahs.
2. Wolves
Wolves share much in common with their close relative, the dog. Even so, they don’t usually share the same temperament, as wolves can be very unpredictable and dangerous.
Furthermore, in Texas, wolves are classified as an endangered species, and it is illegal to keep any endangered animals as pets.
3. Diamondback Terrapins
Terrapins are aquatic turtles. They are small and live for decades, so why would they be illegal?
Diamondback terrapins require specialized care, and more importantly, they can transmit diseases. In Texas, you cannot privately own a terrapin — you may only own one if you acquire a permit for educational, scientific, or zoological purposes.
4. Raccoons
Raccoons are well known for their curiosity and lovable appearance. While many Texans would be interested in domesticated raccoons, the law prohibits it.
In Texas, it is illegal to own fur-bearing animals — or animals traditionally hunted to acquire their pelts — without a special permit. Along with raccoons, it is also illegal to own similar fur-bearing creatures, including beavers, otters, and skunks.
5. Chimpanzees
Are monkeys legal in Texas? Monkeys are not just found at the zoo, as having monkeys as pets is not entirely that uncommon in the U.S.
In Texas, it’s generally illegal to own a “dangerous wild animal” as defined under the law. Nonetheless, interested owners may have the opportunity to apply to obtain legal ownership by filing an application for a Certificate of Registration for Dangerous Wild Animals.
It’s worth noting that approvals for Certificates of Registration are not guaranteed. Without one, a chimp or any other wild animal under Texas’ definition would not be legal to own.
Other Popular Pets That Are Legal To Own in Texas
You may wonder, “Can you own a ferret in Texas?” In Texas, owning ferrets is indeed legal. But are chinchillas legal in Texas? It is possible to own a chinchilla as long as you acquire a permit. Additionally, as far as the hedgehog pet, Texas does allow these animals as well.
