A Houston police sergeant was injured early Saturday morning when a drunk driver struck his vehicle from behind.

He was responding to another DWI crash at the time

Sedan Crossed Median on North Loop East Freeway

The January 14th accident occurred shortly after 2:00 a.m. when an orange sedan traveling along the North Loop East freeway veered across the median near I-45 and the 610 loop at Airline Drive.

“In the process, she cracked her oil pan, lost control of her car, and she ended up disabled in a moving lane on the entrance ramp,” HPD Sergeant David Rose told the Houston Chronicle.

An 18-Wheeler was forced to drive off the highway to avoid hitting the sedan.

Kia Rearended Responding Police Vehicle, Kia Driver Arrested

“None of those people were injured, they’re both on the scene, and patrol is handling that crash,” Rose continued. “That sergeant responded to that crash, and shortly after he made it to the scene, he asked four units to help shut it down because it’s a dangerous spot.”

Before those units could arrive, a blue Kia rear-ended the sergeant’s police vehicle. He was transferred to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and was last listed in stable condition.

The woman driving the Kia was arrested and is facing an intoxication assault charge for injuring the police sergeant. The driver of the orange sedan received a DWI citation.

Drunk Driving Accidents, Deaths Are Preventable

Drunk driving crashes are not rare events for the Houston Metro Region.

According to the Texas Department of Transportation, from December 1, 2021, to January 1, 2022, 23% of all traffic deaths in the state involved drunk driving. Those crashes killed 98 people and seriously injured 236 others. Intoxication contributed to 28% of the 791 fatal crashes reported across the Greater Houston area that year, an increase of  9%  compared to 2020.

Fortunately, drunk driving accidents and deaths are 100% preventable:

  • Choose a designated driver who will not drink ANY alcohol.
  • Leave your vehicle at home and use a rideshare service.
  • Call a friend or family member for a ride if you’ve overindulged.
  • Ask your host if you can sleep it off on their couch.
  • Don’t feel like you have to drink, especially if you know you’ll be driving yourself home.

“If you get into your vehicle, there is a very real risk. You’re going to crash into somebody or cause an accident to happen because of your actions,” Sergeant Rose said after Saturday’s dual DWI crashes, “So, it may not happen today, it may not happen the first time you do it, but sooner or later, it’s going to catch up with you.”
