A conductor died tragically this morning after a train and 18-wheeler caused a horrific accident at a Harris County rail yard.
Conductor Was Pinned Between Train and 18-Wheeler
Harris County Deputies were called to the private rail yard, located at 1755 Terminal Road on the east side, just off Federal Road and south of Interstate 10, at approximately 5:45 a.m. on October 29th.
According to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, the conductor was apparently standing at the rear of the train and may have been trying to guide the engineer as it backed out of the yard. The 18-wheeler was crossing the railroad tracks simultaneously, but the train continued in reverse, striking the conductor and pinning him against the rig.
Sadly, he was pronounced dead at the scene. So far, authorities have not released the man’s name or identified his employer.
Railroad Workers are Twice as Likely to Die on the Job
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, railroad conductors and yardmasters have one of the highest rates of injuries and illnesses of all occupations. Railroad employees are also about twice as likely to die on the job as the average American worker.
A total of 527 railroad-related deaths occurred in the United States during 2020. While 94% of those fatalities involved trespassers, 10 railroad employees died on the job that year. According to the National Safety Council, those 10 railroad worker deaths represented a 25% increase compared to the previous year.
