One lineman died tragically and another was seriously injured when the basket on a crane failed early Sunday morning in Chambers County, Texas.
Crane Basket Fell Over 100 Feet Outside Mont Belvieu
The March 21st accident occurred around 12:30 a.m., as the victims were working on a high-voltage power line near Farm-to-Market Road 1942 and Hatcherville, just outside the Mont Belvieu city limits.
According to the Chambers County Sherriff’s Office, their metal lift basket became unstable and separated from the crane. The basket then fell more than 100 feet to the ground.
One of the linemen was pronounced dead at the scene. His co-worker was flown to Hermann Memorial Hospital in Houston, where he is being treated for serious injuries.
Chambers County authorities have yet to identify the victims or their employer. Yesterday’s tragic accident remains under investigation.
Falls from Elevation a Leading Cause of Linemen Fatalities
According to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries, at least 26 linemen died on the job in 2019.
While those performing electrical work from high places face many risks unique to their occupation, other factors, including inadequate training, lack of protective gear, and poorly maintained or defective equipment, only exacerbate those dangers.
The leading causes of fatal injury among linemen include electrocutions, falls from elevation, and injuries from falling objects. The main causes of non-fatal injuries include over-exertion, electrical shock injuries (burns), sprains and strains, cuts and lacerations, and contusions.
