Two people died tragically yesterday morning after a major gas explosion demolished three two-story rowhouses in Baltimore, Maryland.
At least seven others were injured in the blast, some critically.
Victims’ Cries Heard from Beneath the Rubble
The August 10th explosion erupted just before 10:00 a.m. in the 4200 block of Labyrinth Road, just behind the Reisterstown Road Plaza shopping center near the Baltimore city-county line. The blast could be heard for miles, threw bricks and other debris into nearby homes, and blew out windows and doors in others.
Neighbors rendering aid reported hearing cries of “Help! I’m here!” from those buried in the wreckage, including some thought to be children.
“We had Baltimoreans rushing to try to save their neighbors from something that you just don’t expect to see in a city,” City Council President Brandon Scott told The Baltimore Sun. “You saw an entire city, really an entire region, come around those people yesterday, and that’s what I’m thankful for.”
5 Baltimore Explosion Victims in Critical Condition
Emergency crews recovered the body of a woman trapped in the rubble shortly after the explosion. The remains of an unidentified man was discovered just before 1:00 a.m. on Tuesday.
Seven people are being treated at area hospitals, including five listed in critical condition.
Authorities in Baltimore have not released any of the victims’ names or ages.
Around 200 residents were affected by the explosion, including 30 people who moved to a temporary shelter. While they will not be able to return to their homes today, officials are hoping they will be able to come back and gather their belongings.
Baltimore Natural Gas Leaks Surged in Recent Years
So far, officials have yet to determine what caused yesterday’s fatal blast. Baltimore Electric and Gas – the nation’s oldest gas company – indicated its investigation would include inspection of gas mains and service piping leading to the rowhouses, as well as gas meters and nearby appliances.
Like many cities across the United States, Baltimore sits atop miles of aging gas pipelines, including many dating back to the 1950s and 1960s. Baltimore Electric and Gas has been working to replace those lines, but the project is expected to take at least two decades.
According to The New York Times, the number of gas line leaks reported in Baltimore surged 75% between 2009 and 2016.
