A Fairfield, Texas man died tragically when an 18-wheeler crossed into the path of his motorcycle at a Freestone County intersection earlier this month.
Motorcycle Crash Victim was Father to 5 Children
The June 17th accident occurred as the victim headed east along Highway 84 in Fairfield. According to the Freestone County Sheriff’s Department, the 18-wheeler crossed in front of the motorcycle while pulling onto Highway 84 from FM 1580 (Post Oak Road).
Sadly, the husband and father of five children died at the crash scene.
Scene of Fairfield Motorcycle Crash Awaits New Traffic Lights
According to the Freestone County Times, that intersection only has a stop sign and flashing lights. While the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) agreed to install new traffic signals in February, the contract has yet to go out for bidding.
“This delay, especially waiting six months for materials, is unacceptable, and we share in the public’s frustration,” Fairfield City Administrator Nate Smith told the Times.
The City did reach out to TxDOT one day after the fatal crash in a bid to push the project forward. Texas Representative Cody Harris (R-Palestine) and Senator Charles Schwertner (R-Georgetown) have also been notified of the problem.
Motorcyclists 25 Times More Likely to Die in an Accident
According to TxDOT, 418 motorcyclists (operators and passengers) were killed in Texas during 2018. About half weren’t wearing helmets when they died.
Collisions involving other vehicles account for more than half of all fatal motorcycle accidents in the United States. The most common type of crash occurs when a car or truck pulls in front of the motorcycle.
Because they lack the protection of an enclosed vehicle, a motorcyclist is about 25 times more likely to die in an accident than the occupants of cars.
