Three oilfield workers are recovering from severe burns today, following a compression station explosion in southeast Wyoming last Thursday night.
Explosion Erupted on EOG Resources Site
The December 5th explosion erupted shortly before 7:30 p.m. on an EOG Resources site located just outside Carpenter, near the Colorado border and roughly 20 miles from Cheyenne.
A medical helicopter flew one of the injured men to Western States Burn Center in Greeley, Colorado. The two others were taken by ambulance to Cheyenne Regional Medical Center before being transported to Greeley.
Wyoming Oilfield Explosion Victims Upgraded to Stable Condition
Fortunately, all three victims had been upgraded to stable condition as of Friday, and all were able to speak with their families.
“Those guys have a long road ahead,” Laramie County Fire District No. 4 Fire Chief Scott Maddison told the Casper Star-Tribune.
Although Houston, Texas-based EOG Resources confirmed the injured were all contract workers, authorities have yet to release their names or identify their employer.
Natural Gas Leak Likely Set Off Explosion
While the Wyoming oilfield explosion remains under investigation, witnesses have suggested a natural gas leak was to blame. They include one worker who heard a “pop, pop” and attempted to shut down the gas just seconds before the disaster began to unfold.
“When he turned around, he heard another explosion and it was like a huge fire ball,” Maddison said.
“They’re gonna have a team in there today to investigate,” he continued. “All we know is that whatever caused it, it was natural gas-fed.”
