Two landscaping contractors died tragically yesterday morning, after falling into a mobile fertilizer truck located on the grounds of a high school in southwest Houston, Texas.
Contractors Were Overcome by Fumes at Wisdom High School
The horrific accident occurred as three employees of Hy-Turf Seeding were spreading fertilizer near an athletic track located behind Wisdom High School. The first contractor fell into the truck’s tank sometime around 9:30 a.m. The second man fell just moments later, apparently while attempting to help his co-worker escape.
The third contractor called 911 after realizing he wouldn’t be able to aid the others.
While authorities believe both men were overcome by fumes, they have yet to identify the chemical contained in the tank. It’s also unclear if the unidentified contractors were wearing the appropriate safety gear when they died.
Workers’ Remains Recovered Over 6 Hours Later
Emergency crews spent more than six hours recovering the workers’ remains.
“The concentration, it is extremely dangerous if you are within a few feet of the opening,” Michael Mire, assistant chief with the Houston Fire Department, said Monday afternoon.
You can easily become overwhelmed by the fumes and it appears that’s what may have happened here and that’s why even our members who were close to the container and at the top of the container were wearing special suits and breathing apparatus to protect themselves from the fumes.” Houston Truck Accident Attorney today.
