An accident aboard a Shell Oil platform in the Gulf Mexico tragically killed two offshore workers on Sunday and left a third injured.
Shell Augur Platform Workers Killed During Lifeboat Test
The June 30th incident occurred sometime around 10:00 a.m., during a routine operation to test lifeboat launch and retrieval capabilities aboard Shell Oil’s Auger Tension Leg Platform, located roughly 214 miles southwest of New Orleans, Louisiana.
Royal Dutch Shell has so far declined to disclose details of the offshore accident, but confirmed it did not involve any leak or release of oil.
According to media reports, one of the workers killed on Sunday morning was a Shell employee. The other was identified as a contractor with Danos, an oilfield services firm based in Louisiana.
A second Shell employee suffered minor injuries and was treated at a local hospital.
Federal Agencies Investigating Shell Offshore Accident
The U.S. Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) is investigating the Shell offshore accident, as is the the U.S. Coast Guard.
“At about 6:30 (Monday) morning, Coast Guard sent over a team of inspectors and investigators from New Orleans to the platform to begin the investigation into the cause of the incident and inspect equipment,” Coast Guard spokesman Travis Magee told NOLA.com.
Shell Oil has also launched an internal probe.

Unfortunately, the incident aboard the Shell Augur platform marked the third fatal Gulf of Mexico drilling accident in the past month.
One man has been missing since May 29th, when he fell into the water from Renaissance Offshore’s Eugene Island 331 platform, roughly 75 miles from Vermillion, Louisiana
Just days later, another worker died after falling 90-feet through an opening aboard Chevron’s Green Canyon Block 205, Platform A, about 150 miles from New Orleans.
The BSEE has established separate panels to investigate the earlier accidents.
