Speeding 18-Wheeler Triggers Multi-Vehicle Crash Along I-10 in San Antonio, Texas

A motorist died tragically Monday night, after a speeding 18-wheeler triggered a multi-vehicle crash along Interstate 10 West in San Antonio, Texas.

18-Wheeler Was Unable to Slow in Time for Construction Traffic

The June 24th accident occurred shortly before 7:30 p.m. in an area near Loop 1604 that’s currently under construction.

According to the San Antonio Police Department, a green Freightliner 18-Wheeler was traveling at a high rate of speed as it approached the traffic-congested work zone. Unable to stop in time, the big rig subsequently struck a white Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck from behind.

The force of the collision then pushed the pickup into the back of another semi-truck.

Pickup Truck Driver Died at Scene, Passenger Suffered Minor Injuries

Sadly, the driver of the pickup truck died at the scene. Police later identified the deceased as a 51-year-old man from San Antonio.

His adult passenger underwent treatment for minor injuries at San Antonio Military Medical Center.

Both 18-wheeler drivers apparently escaped the crash unharmed.

San Antonio Police continue to investigate Monday night’s tragedy. So far, it’s not clear if anyone will be charged in connection with the accident.

30% of Construction Zone Crashes Involve Large Trucks

According to the Federal Highway Administration (FHA), 18-wheelers and other large trucks are a factor in roughly 30% of all construction zone crashes that occur each year.

Unfortunately, the number of people killed in these accidents is on the rise. In just the past five years alone, construction zone crashes involving large commercial trucks have caused over 1,000 deaths and more than 18,000 injuries.

While it’s not clear how many of these tragedies were the result of trucks traveling at a high rate of speed, the FHA points out that an 18-wheeler or other big rig going 55 mph requires about 50% more time to stop compared to a car traveling the same speed.
