A worker died tragically yesterday morning, after a concrete pump truck collapsed on a Smith County, Texas, construction site.
Worker Struck by Boom When Pump Truck Collapsed
The accident occurred around 9:30 p.m., at the Lone Star Truck Group, just off Interstate 20.
The 39-year-old Texarkana man was operating a concrete boom at the time. For some reason, the weight shifted and caused the concrete pump truck to collapse.
The boom subsequently struck the victim’s head and knocked him to the grown. Sadly, he died at the scene.
Construction Accidents Account for 20% of Workplace Deaths
The U.S. Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) has launched an investigation into the worker’s death.
According to OSHA, 971 construction workers died on the job in 2017, accounting for roughly 20% of all work-related fatalities. Accidents like yesterday’s concrete pump truck collapse – so-called caught-in/between hazards – caused nearly 9% of those deaths, enough to earn fourth place on OSHA’s list of “Fatal Four” construction industry hazards in 2017.
Falls took the top spot that year, followed by struck-by hazards and electrocutions.
Caught-in/between accidents occur when a worker is struck, caught, or crushed in a collapsing structure, equipment, or materials. To mitigate these hazards, OSHA recommends that construction sites ensure all machinery is properly guarded, supported, secured, and safe.
