More than 30 people were hurt Sunday afternoon when a charter bus transporting dozens of teenaged girls home from a church retreat crashed on Interstate 81 in Pennsylvania.
Several of the injured were taken to the hospital in critical condition.
Lives Changed By Christ Church Chartered Bus for Fall Retreat
The September 19th accident occurred shortly after 2:30 p.m. as the bus headed south on I-81 in Schuylkill County. According to the Pennsylvania State Police, the vehicle veered off the road near mile marker 111.7 in Frailey Township, roughly 65 miles west of Allentown. The bus then went over the exit ramp, crossed Route 25, and hit the center guardrail before coming to rest in a wooded area about 50 feet from the interstate.
About 100 first responders were dispatched to the accident scene.
The bus was one of three chartered by the Lives Changed By Christ Church in Lancaster County to transport teen volunteers and staff home from a student ministry retreat in Manheim, Pennsylvania. All of the passengers aboard the wrecked bus – mostly Freshman and Sophomore high school girls — suffered “varying degrees of injuries.”
32 People Hospitalized, Including 5 In Critical Condition
“At this time, we transported 32 to the local hospitals,” Tremont Fire Chief Brian Eisenacher told WBRE of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. “Several went by helicopter, mostly by ground EMS to several hospitals throughout the county,”
Five were in critical condition, and one firefighter was treated for minor injuries. The bus driver, a 37-year-old man from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, was also among the injured.
No other vehicles were involved in the accident.
