Three workers died tragically this afternoon, and another was injured when a building under construction partially collapsed in west Houston, Texas.
Stairwell Collapsed at Future Marathon Oil Headquarters
First responders were called to the One MRO project, located at 990 Town & Country Blvd., near City Centre, shortly after 1:30 p.m. on October 5th. The 15-story, 440,000 square foot skyscraper will serve as headquarters for Marathon Oil Corp. upon its scheduled completion in the summer of 2021.
“Out of nowhere, I hear a loud banging sound,” one witness told KPRC 2. “It sounded like a building was collapsing, which, I checked out, it didn’t happen, but all I saw was the parking building … we’re very close to the parking building. All you see is a bunch of smoke.”
While the Houston Fire Department initially reported that the partial collapse had resulted in multiple injuries, it was later confirmed that three people had been killed and a fourth had been hurt.
Fears of Further Collapse Hinder Recovery Efforts
The injured worker was rescued and taken to the hospital in stable condition.
The remains of the deceased workers have not yet been recovered, and there’s no word on how long it might take to stabilize the scene and remove their bodies. While the building itself is not in danger of collapse, there is concern that the stairwell could collapse even further.
“We’re going to take all the time necessary to ensure the safe recovery of the bodies,” Assistant Chief Ray Lozano told The Houston Chronicle.
So far, authorities have not released the victims’ names or identified their employers.
The One MRO project is located in a mixed-use development next to an apartment complex and across from office towers, restaurants, and retail outlets. The project is being developed by Hines, with Harvey General Contracting acting as general contractor.
